IS YOUR BUTT ASLEEP?!
Learn the root cause of many cases of low back pain, knee problems, and postural distortion: your booty!! Having a strong arse isn't just about looking fine AF! It's about keeping your center of gravity stable, and keeping upright in a society that's very forward oriented.
SO! Let's get right to it! "Glute Amnesia"
Your hips are at the center of your body, and house the biggest and strongest muscles. When these structures and your pelvis are misaligned or weakened, as so often happens when we sit for long periods of time, your center of gravity becomes displaced. What's this mean for the rest of your body? It means you will find yourself compensating in very interesting ways!
A very common way I see this show up with my massage clients, is when the lower back ends out compensating for the inactivity of the glutes. If your backside isn't actively holding you up against gravity, your upper body has to move forward to keep you upright instead. Basically- this collapses the lower back, and causes tension in the hip flexors (in the front of the hips) and can directly cause lower back pain.
It has also shown up in the knees and shoulders, because of the offset
weight and workload from the strong muscles of the hips. A side effect of having weak hips, the knees must move in to accommodate tightness down the legs, and easily causes over pronation (and fallen arches).
It's a downward cycle that can wreak havoc on your posture and general alignment. It even traces up to the shoulders, because they have to move forward to balance out the uneven hip positioning.
Sitting complicates the matter worse, because it tightens the front of the hips, and perpetuates the cycle.
So how do we resolve this issue of the sleepy butt?
During assessments with new clients, I address the degree of tension being held in the lower back, and check out the alignment of the hips. I always recommend having your body assessed when dealing with hip imbalances, because there's always so much you can't actually see yourself.
From there, we begin to release muscles that are holding you in your postural habit, in the muscle memory, and relax them enough to create space and restore function. We use stretching to reteach the tight muscles to remember how to shut off and relax.
After that, we begin strengthening the muscles in the hips that have been "asleep", probably for years!
It's a simple process that has worked for long-term results, for dozens of clients. Best thing about it? You can sustain it yourself, without RELYING on any one type of outside resources, once your body is restabilized and re-educated.
If you think your booty is asleep, and not doing the work it's supposed to in keeping you upright, you may be experiencing low back pain, knee issues, or ankle issues. It can show up a myriad of ways, so it you suspect glute amnesia as part of your posture distortion and chronic pain, give me a call at the number below to learn how you can undo these muscle memory patterns, and get feeling way better, and STAY longer!
